You Can Help to Protect Mayan Lawyer Following Attempt on His Life

On August 2 two masked men swerved in front of Amilcar Pop's car, forcing him to a violent stop. The men drew guns and beat on the windows of the Guatemalan lawyer's car shouting that they would kill him. Despite injuries from the accident, Pop was able to reverse his car and escape.
As President of the Guatemalan Association of Mayan Lawyers, Amilcar Pop works in defense of human rights and against discrimination and racism. The attempt on his life is the latest incident in a series of threats and harassment, including baseless prosecutions and anonymous letters and phone calls.

Take action now to urge the Guatemalan government to: Investigate the attempted murder and prosecute those responsible; and ensure that Amilcar Pop and the other human rights lawyers that work with him are adequately protected by bodyguards and given other forms of protection.

El día 2 de agosto un vehículo se interpuso frente al Sr. Amilcar Popforzándolo a frenar de forma repentina. Dos hombres armados con el rostrocubierto se acercaron hacia el Sr. Pop en cada lado del vehículo. Golpearon las ventanas intentando sin éxito abrir las puertas y gritaban que lo matarían. Apesar de sus heridas el Sr. Pop reaccionó rápidamente para escapar de losperpetradores que continuaron en su persecución.El Sr. Pop es un abogado de origen Maya de renombre y presidente de la
Asociación de Abogados y Notarios Mayas de Guatemala. La Asociación es unaorganización no gubernamental que rechaza toda forma de violencia, desde elaño 2006 el Sr. Pop y la Asociación han representado a varias comunidades indígenas de San Juan Sacatepéquez en su oposición a una cementera.Tememos que el atentado contra su vida es parte de un patrón de intimidación(amenazas y persecuciones penales infundadas) que intenta detener sus actividades.
